Chuck
Mays
While
in high school, Chuck did not want to be stuck in one aspect
of hip-hop, so he immersed himself in rhyming, at the same
time he worked at perfecting his skills as a B-boy and as
a graffiti artist. Chuck began to spend many nights bus hopping
and writing his name on as many buses and bus stops as possible
as well as hitting as many basement parties to battle rap.
During this time, Chuck wanted to do everything related to
the hip-hop movement. Though his first love was Jazz, he never
left, because he often found himself going back to that type
of music.
As an intern at Polygram Distribution, Chuck learned how music
moved and generated money in the United States and overseas.
This opened his eyes to learn more about the music business
and landed him a job at a small Bay Area independent record
label, OutBac Records. Working at an independent record label
showed Chuck that he could be more than a rapper or DJ. At
that point, Chuck decided to go back to what he new best,
making music. He started to produce music tracks on his own,
and produced his first track for an artist by the name of
Kid Official. Working by himself as a writer and producer,
Chuck would take his drum machine, and notebook everywhere.
He would work all day on writing and producing new songs while
still playing drums with varies music groups.
